Cancer therapiesRecent statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that about 24.6 million people worldwide are currently living with a cancerous disease. According to WHO estimates, this number will rise to approximately 30 million by the year 2020. The number of incidences per year is also steadily increasing. Whereas circa 10.9 million new cases were reported in 2002, the WHO expects the number of incidences to reach 16 million by 2020. At the same time, the medical demand for new medicines and treatment methods remains very high. Today, only about half of the cancer patients can be successfully treated with current standard methods such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Alongside cardiovascular diseases, cancer is still one of the most common fatal diseases in Western industrialized countries. In other words, cure rates are extremely unsatisfactory. Moreover, some of today's standard therapies can have significant side effects. Scientists involved with cancer research have therefore made it a priority to find new and improved treatment methods such as modern immunotherapies.
