MOLOGEN AG: Patent granted for innovative technology in China
The Berlin-based biotechnology company MOLOGEN AG announced today that it has been granted patent protection for its innovative MIDGE-Th1 technology in China.
Using the MIDGE technology, MOLOGEN develops so-called “DNA vaccines” for the prevention and treatment of severe infectious diseases. In 2005, MOLOGEN had been granted a patent for this technology in the European Union. In 2006, MOLOGEN has entered a research and development, collaboration and license agreement with a leading US animal health company for its MIDGE-based vaccine against Leishmaniasis for a companion animal application.
MOLOGEN plans to develop MIDGE-based vaccines also for the use in humans. Leishmaniasis is one the focus indications within MOLOGEN's development program. In China, Leishmaniasis is strongly emerging among humans and animals.
“Our MIDGE technology has become the standard for the development of DNA vaccines”, said Professor Burghardt Wittig, Chief Executive Officer of MOLOGEN AG. “From our point of view DNA vaccines provide an ideal solution for vaccines against life-threatening infectious diseases such as Leismaniasis. Those diseases play a growing role especially in emerging countries like China and India. The Chinese patent provides the legal and economic foundation to develop innovative vaccines for this major market opportunity.” About MIDGE-Th1MIDGE-TH1 facilitates the design of highly specific and most efficient DNA vaccines in a way that the so called TH1 pathway of the immune system is triggered to overcome infections. This TH1 pathway is required to fight pathogens which replicate within the cell.
About LeishmaniasisThe pathogens causing the disease Leishmaniasis can be transmitted between animals and human beings. With high prevalence, Leishmaniasis occurs in regions of subtropical and mediterranean climate. Parasites of the genus Leishmania are transmitted by certain sandflies. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified the Leishmaniasis as an emerging disease. To develop new and more effective therapeutics and vaccines against Leishmaniasis, a number of multi-national research programs have been launched.
About MOLOGENMOLOGEN AG is a listed biopharmaceutical company with headquarters in Berlin (Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Regulated Market, ISIN DE0006637200). On the basis of patented technologies (MIDGE and dSLIM), MOLOGEN develops DNA-based vaccines and therapeutic agents for the prevention and treatment of a wide range of serious illnesses.
